New Tech-Enabled Intercity Bus Service Coming to PNW

Launching in the Pacific Northwest next week, FlixBus is a tech-driven travel company that will connect Seattle, Spokane, Portland, Tacoma, Eugene and surrounding cities for fares as low as $10.

The long-distance, electric bus company launched six years ago as a startup in Germany. Since then, FlixBus has become the largest bus company in Europe, now serving more than 29 countries. Last year, it launched its U.S. business in California.

Now, the company has announced a new partnership with Seattle-based transportation service MTRWestern to roll out the lime green buses beginning Thursday, Nov. 21. Six routes a day will travel between Seattle and Portland with tickets currently available at $9.99.

“This has been one of the most meticulously laid out expansions in FlixBus history,” said managing director of FlixBus USA Pierre Gourdain. “We really wanted to build a strong foundation — from having a great partner to offering the most competitive travel times and frequencies. Ultimately, we want to win over the hearts of residents and prove that having a car is a thing of the past.”

Long distance bus travel is currently the most eco-friendly mode of long-distance travel in the U.S., according to a press release. With the added benefit of electric-powered vehicles, FlixBus has offered an even more environmentally conscious option. The company, well on its way to achieving this goal, has plans to make all bus and train trips, as well as business operations, completely carbon neutral by 2030 at the latest.

In addition to its electric-powered vehicles, FlixBus is a partner of the National Forest Foundation and offers riders the option to offset the carbon emissions produced during their journey when booking.
